Ah yes!
When the Google Nexus One was announced, there were crazy innovative new features shown for the smart phone and Android 2.1: interactive wallpapers, 3D stuff and help for G Earth. The last was not available then, and there was not a time or date set, but it looks like it is ready on Droid now.
If anyone had Droid 1.5 or 1.6, do not bother. Not to slap your mother, but your device does not have the power needed to support such an intensive application. Geeks reporting the applications availability have all been Nexus owners, and that means this is a 2.1-only program so far. Nexus owners will have to hold off for the 2.1 update, which would appear to be taking longer than most would have wanted or expected.
There’s not one peep or tweet official yet from Google, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated when the announcement is official.
Google Earth for Android Released
Google Earth for Android is now available for download in the Android Market. I just logged in the Android Market on my Nexus One to check out some new apps and saw the Google Earth app which just released a few minutes ago.
I’m downloading it right now on my phone. Will update more about the app and how it works later.
UPDATE: So after playing with the app for a few minutes, I must say it’s really cool and worth checking out by all Droid/N1 users!
Google Earth for Android was first introduced and unveiled at the Google Nexus One launch on January 5. Today it finally made its way to the Android Market for everyone to download. Just a few days ago, I was trying to get my hands on this app which was in testing among Googlers.
This app supports multitouch on the Nexus One, not sure if it does the same on the Droid. It is compatible with devices on Android 2.0 or later.

Although there’s lots of great iPhone apps, Google Earth is the one guaranteed to ‘wow’ everyone from your tech savvy buddy to your Ludditical grandmother. One of the weird things about Google, though, is how they oftentimes prioritize their products for platforms (like the iPhone) they aren’t invested in, at the expense of ones they are (Android). Knowing that, it’s not so surprising that Google Earth wasn’t available on the Android Market to date… but today, that all changed.
Unfortunately, there’s a big “but.” Right now, Google Earth only works on handsets with Android 2.1 installed, which means that it only officially supports Google’s so-called “Google Phone,” the HTC Nexus One. Motorola Droid customers should buck up, since it’ll also be available to them soon, as well as some other HTC handsets which are due for a 2.1 upgrade soon. Still, all this version iteration is really starting to hurt Google: it’s pretty shameful that Google can’t even get its own apps running across all of the numerous versions of its operating system.
Either way, it’s a good app, if you can use it, looking, feeling and operating almost exactly like its iPhone counterpart. There’s even voice navigation. You can grab it now over at the Android Marketplace, if you’ve got the smartphone to run it.
